Unconfirmed reports say that Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) is fielding former long-time President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s eldest son Faris Maumoon in the September presidential race.

In May the Elections Commission of Maldives decided to dissolve the party, as MRM has repeatedly failed to maintain the least required number of members in its registry.

There are reports that Faris is obtaining okays from the court system as part of his preparation for the presidential bid.

Faris has not commented on the speculations yet. However, some media outlets have reported that Faris is getting ready to contest the election as an independent candidate if the Elections Commission of Maldives does not allow MRM to field a candidate.

The last election that Faris contested was the parliamentary election of 2019. He could not win the seat that he contested in the election.
