The Board of Election Commissioners passed a no-confidence vote against the Chairman of the Board Fuwad Thowfeek on Monday.

The non-binding vote was taken in a meeting of the board chaired by Vice Chairman Ismail Habeeb. Habeeb said all the commissioners except Fuwad attended the meeting.

The commissioners passed the vote in protest against “public statements” that Fuwad had made during the registration of The Democrats – the most recently registered political party in Maldives. Habeeb said that since then, trust in Fuwad was severely damaged in the board of commissioners.

The agenda for the no-confidence vote was finalized last Tuesday. The relevant law does not permit commissioners of the board to remove the chairman. The Chairman of the Election Commission of Maldives can only be removed by the People’s Majlis, the parliament, says the law.
