PPM’s presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen has not yet selected his running mate, the party says amid speculations that a person had already been selected to jointly run with him on his ticket.

Also, PPM says that it’s a choice left exclusively to President Yameen to decide on his running mate.

Hussain Tholal, the Secretary General of PPM and President Yameen’s agent for the September presidential election said that fundamental rules of the party authorize the presidential candidate of the party to decide on his choice without the participation of others.

However, Tholal said that President Yameen had asked the party’s leadership to advise him on the selection of a running mate. Subsequently, the leadership decided on Monday to leave the choice to President Yameen to make, said Tholal.

President Yameen signed his candidacy documents on Monday through an arrangement made by Maldives Correctional Service.

But his candidacy form is yet to be submitted. The electoral law requires that the form should be submitted to the Elections Commission of Maldives with the names of the presidential candidate and the running mate.
