One among many vice presidents of the main opposition PPM-PNC Coalition and the Mayor of Malé City – the largest city in the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu rubbishes rumors and speculations that he is seeking presidential nomination if President Abdulla Yameen were not able to run for office in the September election.

He issued a statement of support for Yameen’s candidacy and the unity of the coalition on Wednesday. In his statement, the mayor said that he has placed no preconditions in supporting President Yameen running in the race.

Mayor Muizzu in his statement also said that he is completely a part of the effort being exerted to free Yameen from prison.

“None is entitled to circulate rumors and speculations that impact negatively on President Yameen’s nomination. Nobody should contribute to creating cracks in the unity of the party (PPM-PNC Coalition)”, Muizzu said in the statement.

In his statement, he strongly condemned attempts made to create disunity within the party from inside and outside of the coalition.

He urged the justice system to cancel the eleven-year sentence that President Yameen is serving in Maafushi Penitentiary.

Mayor Muizzu noted that he has a very positive impression of President Yameen, who is “a unique and passionate patriot”.

PPM-PNC Coalition nominated President Yameen to contest in the September 2023 election in August 2022. However, a subsequent prison sentence against President Yameen is stalling him from running for office.
