Minister of Youth, Sports, and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof says that the decision to pull out from “the seventh edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games that will take place on the Islands of Trinidad and Tobago between 4 – 11 August 2023, was not related to unavailability of funds but because of unexpectedly higher prices that must be paid for expenses.

He made the comments about the basis of the pull-out decision after rumors started circulating within the sporting community that the government's ways and means were exhausted and that caused the withdrawal.

He thought that there was no logic in spending fat on an event where Maldivian athletes could not possibly make significant breakthroughs. However, the sports minister thinks that saving such fat money for “the Indian Ocean Island Games” to be held in Madagascar starting on 23 August, is reasonable and acceptable.

Minister Mahloof said that the decision to pull out from the Commonwealth Games was reached after consulting the sporting bodies, associations, and the sporting community of the country.
