The Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla says that if the PPM-PNC Coalition’s presidential candidate President Abdulla Yameen drops out of the race nominating Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed in his stead, that would be the easiest candidate for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to defeat in the September election.
Presently Dr. Jameel is the running mate of President Yameen who is battling the legal system to secure his freedom to run in the election after Tuesday’s rejection of his candidacy by the Elections Commission of Maldives.
If the Supreme Court decides to block President Yameen from running in the race, there are speculations that Dr. Jameel would be nominated by the coalition.
Minister Imran said, “President Solih will easily win the election in a single round if Dr. Jameel is nominated”.
Minister Imran Abdulla’s Adhaalath Party is a coalition partner of President Solih since 2018 and remains loyal to the ruling coalition led by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
