The Elections Commission of the Maldives says that every individual candidate taking part in the presidential election scheduled for September 9, should spend less than Rufiyaa 564 million in their campaigns.

The Vice Chairman of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb detailed that a presidential candidate is allowed to spend in the campaign so that not more than Rufiyaa 2000 is spent per head in a constituency.

He said that 282,395 citizens are eligible to vote on September 9 in the presidential election. He multiplied the total number of eligible voters with the per-head upper limit (Rufiyaa 2000) to arrive at Rufiyaa 564,790,000.

Habeeb said that the law on elections prohibits candidates from using money and material donated by foreigners, alien agencies, international organizations, and governments among many others.

He also said that donations could be accepted by the presidential candidates in accordance with the law which details the upper limits.

The law says that all expenditures should be clearly stated by candidates and that no sources of donations should be kept secret in their statements that should be submitted to the Elections Commission.

Voting in the presidential election will take place on September 9. Candidates who wanted to join the race have three days at hand for submitting authenticated documents to the Elections Commission.
