President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih selects MP Mohamed Aslam – MDP North Hithadhoo Constituency, as his Vice-Presidential running mate.

The Secretariat of MDP informed him of the selection early today. Ras.mv learned today that MP Aslam is now obtaining clearances from relevant agencies and courts with regard to any criminal records that he might have which could block him from running in the September 9 presidential race with President Solih.

“President Solih has chosen MDP’s parliamentary group leader MP Aslam as his running mate. We warmly congratulate MP Aslam for being selected as the Vice-Presidential candidate”, MDP’s Secretariat tweeted today.

In normal circumstances, all presidential and vice-presidential candidates should submit their papers at the Elections Commission latest on Monday.

Several candidates are gearing up to submit their official candidacy documents to the Elections Commission before the deadline. However, to date, only former President Abdulla Yameen had submitted his candidacy papers to the commission.

The Supreme Court of the Maldives is hearing a case filed by President Yameen upon the rejection of his candidacy by the Elections Commission last week. It is expected that the court would decide on the case sometime today or tomorrow.
