The Attorney General’s Office (AG Office) sues former President Abdulla Yameen over an unpaid fine of US dollars 5 million.

As part of the Criminal Court’s verdict on money laundering and acceptance of bribes in the lease of state-owned Aarah Island, the court in its 25 December 2022 decision ordered President Yameen to pay a fine of USD 5 million to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in a limited period.

Even though President Yameen so far has not paid the fine, he is presently serving the eleven-year prison sentence of the above verdict at Maafushi Penitentiary.

The AG Office filed the case against President Yameen on Sunday. “This office filed a case today (Sunday) at the Civil Court of the Maldives to recover the unpaid fine stated in the verdict of the Criminal Court”, tweeted the AG Office on Sunday.

The AG Office said that President Yameen did not start making payments as per the schedule given in the Criminal Court’s verdict at the time of filing the case at the Civil Court.

AG Office filed the fine recovery case against President Yameen as he had disregarded MIRA’s notices requesting him to pay the penalty.
