The Maldivian government has unveiled a new environmentally friendly bike-sharing scheme, marking a significant step in its push toward sustainable urban mobility. The initiative, led by Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim, aims to reduce carbon emissions while offering eco-friendly transportation alternatives to the public.

In a press conference yesterday, Minister Thorig revealed that the scheme will first be rolled out in Hulhumale', in collaboration with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC). The project includes the provision of 100 bicycles to HDC, with solar-powered charging stations also set to be installed to support the initiative's sustainability goals further.

According to Minister Thorig, the groundwork for the scheme has been completed, with studies finalized and funds already allocated to ensure the project’s smooth rollout. The initiative, which had been under consideration since before 2018, had previously faced delays but is now moving forward.

The introduction of the bike-sharing system aligns with the Maldivian government’s broader commitment to combating climate change by promoting greener alternatives for public transportation. This scheme is expected to offer a cost-effective, sustainable, and convenient travel option for both residents and visitors in Hulhumale'.
