Health authorities in Gaza reported that Israeli forces surrounded and shelled the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahia, located in the northern part of the territory, at dawn on Saturday.
The hospital director, Marwan Sultan, explained that Israeli tanks had cut off electricity and targeted the second and third floors of the hospital with artillery, putting both medical staff and patients at serious risk.
Sultan emphasized that there were serious risks to medical staff and patients within the hospital.
The Gaza Health Ministry released a statement confirming that Israeli forces had shelled the upper floors, where more than 40 patients, along with medical staff, were present. The ministry also reported heavy gunfire aimed at the hospital and its courtyard, triggering a state of great panic among those inside.
The attack comes as part of Israel’s renewed offensive in northern Gaza, which began earlier this month, with the stated objective of targeting Hamas fighters who were believed to be regrouping in the area.
In a separate incident, Gaza’s civil defense agency confirmed that an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia, a nearby area, killed 33 people on Friday night. The United Nations’ humanitarian affairs agency issued a warning about the worsening conditions for civilians in northern Gaza, noting that families there are enduring heavy bombardment while trying to survive in atrocious conditions.
The situation continues to escalate as the conflict intensifies, leading to growing fears about the safety of civilians and medical staff in the region.
