If elected to office, The Democrats (TD) promise to build 25,000 housing units for the permanent residents of the capital Malé.

The pledge of the party was disclosed at the surfing area in Henveiru District on Sunday evening. The presidential candidate of the party, MP Ilyas Labeeb, who attended the campaign event said that if the people elect him to office in September he would revive the ‘Veshifahi (good environment for living) Malé Vision’ housing policy of former president Mohamed Nasheed, who is presently the Speaker of the People’s Majlis.

MP Ilyas also said that President Nasheed’s vision when implemented would completely solve the Malé area's housing crisis.

Explaining the unending housing crisis in the capital, MP Ilyas said that more than 16,000 families live in spaces that are smaller than 600 square foot units. To address the scarcity, MP Ilyas said he would build several 15-storey condominiums with spacious apartments in Malé which is overflowing with people and vehicles.

“Those who are unable to afford to live in the condominiums will be given council housing through Malé City Council”, MP Ilyas said.

The manifesto of The Democrats states that the party would include three nearby inhabited islands as part of the capital Malé to implement the revived Veshifahi Vision. These three islands are Thulusdhoo, Hinmafushi, and Huraa.

Malé has been expanded several times since the late nineties. The expansion with land reclamation was started during President Ibrahim Nasir’s administration.
