The Government of the Maldives awards contracts to build tertiary hospitals in Kulhuduffushi City and Thinadhoo – the capital of Gaafu Dhaal Atoll.

The contracts were awarded under President Ibrahim Mahomed Solih’s presidential pledge to build tertiary hospitals in five regions of the country.

In addition to the two islands, tertiary hospitals are being developed on Ungoofaaru which is the capital island of Raa Atoll, Gan Island of Laamu Atoll, and Hithadhoo District of Addu City.

The Ministry of Health on behalf of the Government of the Maldives on Tuesday awarded the hospital development projects with 100 beds each on Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo to China National Electric Engineering Company (CNEEC).

The infrastructure of the existing hospitals on the islands would not be connected to the newly developed advanced hospitals. A US$76 million loan from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development would finance the two projects. CNEEC should complete and deliver the hospitals in 30 months.

The Ministry of Health also said that soon 25 additional hospitals with lower bed capacities would be awarded to contractors for development across the country.
