The document circulating about India is a false document, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement released today, the Government of Maldives has raised concern over the document, a letter allegedly from the Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. Jaishankar, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, circulating on social media and has been published in some online newspapers.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the letter that is being circulated is totally fabricated and unsubstantiated.

"The Ministry strongly and unequivocally condemns this devious and cowardly act of fabrication and false allegations in the alleged letter. It is particularly concerning that the timing of this malicious act is aimed at misguiding public perception regarding our strategic bilateral partnership with India, and purports to affect the outcome of the upcoming presidential election," read the statement.

The Ministry then urged all Media to refrain from spreading false information and act more responsibly in line with journalistic standards and ethics accepted internationally as best practice.

The letter circulating on social media said that Exim Bank of India has decided to provide 11 aircraft to the Maldives through an additional $550 million credit line and that it will be operated by the Indian Army.

The Indian High Commission said the letter was being circulated to weaken relations between the Maldives and India.

The Indian High Commission also called on the Maldivian authorities to take immediate action against those spreading false news.
