The Parliament member for the Nolhivaram constituency, Mohammed Nasheed Abdullah (Mosta), has stated changing the governing system may not benefit the people.

He made the statement while speaking at the parliament today during a debate on the resolution moved about changing the system of government.

According to Mosta, the change system is not for the well-being of the people but for the benefit of the Democratic party, and maybe the people who are asking for system change are asking for an election to be held systematically, considering changes in technology and the mindset.

"Therefore, the constitution should include a systematic vote every 15 years regarding the governing system. As technology changes and people's minds develop, a systematic vote should be taken. Maybe that is probably what we are talking about. The system is not being brought in the interest of the people,” Mosta explained.

Mosta added that the problem is not the system of government but the lack of a sincere leader.

The last time a vote was taken on the system of governance in the Maldives was during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyum. The voters decided to maintain a presidential system in the Maldives.
