The Maldives and the Islamic Republic of Iran have reaffirmed the decision to restore diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The decision was announced through a joint statement following a meeting between Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, and Dr. Amir-Abdollahian, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The meeting was held on Friday on the sidelines of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly. During the meeting, Iran and the Maldives, in alignment with the interests and aspirations of their peoples, reaffirmed their decision to restore diplomatic relations. The two Governments have agreed to further develop friendly relations between the two countries based on mutual respect for sovereignty, equality, mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

Both countries have resolved to strengthen cooperation in a wide range of areas including investment, trade, seamless travel and people-to-people contact, science, and technological innovation.

Iran and the Maldives first established diplomatic connections in 1975. However, after declaring that Iran was threatening the stability and security of the Gulf area, the Maldives chose to sever ties with Iran in 2016.
