The Parliament has passed a resolution to provide Aasandha, the universal health insurance scheme of the Maldives, for the treatment of infertility problems.

The resolution was moved by MP Meekail Naseem and passed by a majority of the members present in the House today. The resolution said it is important to ensure that all Maldivians have equal access to good quality basic health services under the Health Services Act.

The resolution highlighted the concerns on few opportunities for infertility treatment within the health system. The resolution also noted that some medicines are difficult to obtain in the Maldives and that some essential medicines are not available under Aasandha.

Members of Parliament who debated the issue called for a national study to understand why such cases are increasing in the Maldives and for easy access to some basic medicines used for fertility problems. Members also called for the establishment of strong rules and standards in the provision of services under Aasandha.

The resolution passed unanimously by 45 members present.
