The President-elect requests to postpone an agreement between the State Trading Organization (STO) and an Indian company.

According to the Spokesperson of the office of the President-elect, Mohamed Firuzul Abdullah Khaleel, President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu requested the government to hold off on an agreement between STO and an Indian company to import medicines. Firzul said the President-elect is concerned that such a project is being carried out so fast at this stage as it is an important and sensitive issue related to the public health of the people.

Earlier, Firuzul raised concerns over the government not placing orders for medical equipment required for the last six months of this year and noted that some hospitals are currently using emergency equipment. Firuzul said there were concerns that the services of health centers and hospitals could come to a halt due to lack of resources.

STO is the largest importer of medicines and other healthcare equipment in the Maldives. STO has already signed 27 such agreements, including an agreement with AstraZeneca, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, last September.
