The MDP has filed the case in the Supreme Court after the no-confidence motion against the Speaker of the Parliament, Mr. Mohamed Nasheed, was not taken up in Parliament today as scheduled.

The Parliament had been scheduled to hear the no-confidence motion against Nasheed today, and According to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, the Vice-Speaker of Parliament shall preside over the impeachment session. However, the Parliament’s Secretary-General Fathimath Niusha decided to cancel the sitting, as Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla called in sick.

Following this, the MDP has moved the Supreme Court to declare that the adjournment of the Parliament is in violation of Article 8 of the Constitution and to order the Parliament to proceed with the no-confidence motion against the Speaker in accordance with the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure. The MDP also asked the Supreme Court to declare that no further work of the Parliament can be done until the resolution is completed.

The MDP motion alleges that the Speaker of Parliament has abused his powers. As a result, the country's rule of law is being disrupted and the public interests of the country are being undermined.
