Former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyum has criticized the Arab Islamic countries for having strong armed forces yet failing to support Palestine.

In a post on platform X (former Twitter), President Maumoon said that Muslims around the world are saddened to see hundreds of people killed in Israeli attacks against Palestinian civilians. He said he did not see the Arab countries working to defend their freedom.

They have strong armies armed with the latest weapons, but Maumoon questioned the benefits of these armies.

"It pains us, the Muslims of the world, to see the brutal attacks carried out by Israeli forces against Palestinian civilians and the martyrdom of hundreds of them every day, and we do not see a strong response from the Arab countries in defense of their freedom and dignity, despite their possession of strong armies armed with the latest weapons. What is the benefit of these armies?" (Loosely translated)

Tensions flared up on October 7 when militants from the Gaza-based Palestinian radical group Hamas staged a surprise incursion into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip. In response, Israel announced a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and began delivering air strikes on the enclave.

The ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel has caused the highest number of fatalities in Gaza since Israel unilaterally withdrew from the territory in 2005. The health ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza said Saturday that at least 7,703 people have been killed in the war with Israel that erupted on October 7.
