Parliament Member for Machchangoalhi Central constituency, Mohamed Nasheed, resigns as Speaker of the Parliament today.

In his resignation letter to the Secretary of Parliament, Nasheed said he was resigning to follow democratic principles.

The Speaker's resignation letter also criticized the MDP, which has a majority in Parliament. He also accused the party of working against democratic principles.

The resignation comes as the MDP has filed a motion to remove him from the post. The matter was also on the agenda for today's session.
