Former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyum has decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The ceremony will be held at Republic Square, this Friday at 4 pm.

According to local media reports, Yameen has decided not to attend the swearing-in ceremony because he sees the presence of a person serving a criminal sentence in such a ceremony as a detriment to the dignity of the ceremony.

He said that civilized societies would not accept his participation in the ceremony. Therefore, Yameen has now informed the Parliament that he will not be able to attend the ceremony.

Yameen is currently serving his sentence for bribery and money laundering.
