The Election Commission (EC) has asked the parliamentary elections to be held before the month of Ramadan.

The Election Commission requested that the polls be held before Ramadan at the meeting of the Independent Institutions Committee of the Parliament today.

EC Vice-President Ismail Habeeb said the law requires the next parliamentary elections to be held 120 days before the end of the current Parliament.

According to law, if the 2024 parliamentary elections are scheduled, they will be held on March 19, he said. However, he said the election should be held after March as schools, which are being used as polling stations, will be having exams by then. If waited till exams are over, the elections will be held on March 30, but it will be the 20th of Ramadan, Habeeb said.

Speaking further at the meeting, Habeeb requested the polls to be held before Ramadan by changing the law to change the number of days given for campaign before the poll or by changing the duration between the end of the current Parliament and the elections of the next Parliament.
