Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has said that with the development of Velana International Airport of the Maldives (VIA), the country has run into more debt.
Speaking at the recent parliament sitting, Nasheed said that the development of Velana International Airport came in without considering the insufficient revenue it generates, and it has brought in immense debt for the whole country. Nasheed also advised considering the benefit of the country rather than satisfying certain people when bringing in developments for the country.
Speaking further in regards to the discussions of developing airports in regions where Parliament members represented, Nasheed hesitated while saying that there are many things to be considered before developing new airports. He also added that islands should not be considered as separate countries for developing new airports.
Meanwhile, the current administration policies are different from Nasheed’s views in regards to developing more airports in the country.
The current administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has supported the policies of increasing the number of airports set by former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom. Henceforth, the current government administration plans to develop an airport in every 20-minute flying distance as per the Minister of Economics, Fayyaz Ibrahim.
