State Trading Organization (STO) has started selling onions in bulk to shops on condition that they are imported and sold at a controlled rate.

The decision comes after public complaints about the onion price hike.

According to the State Trading Organization (STO), onion prices in the Indian market have been rising since August, which has affected the Maldivian market as well. As a result, the price of a sack of onions in the local market has increased.

The cost of onions in the Maldives market has increased significantly, with prices ranging between MVR 800 and MVR 900 per sack as of December. Following complaints from the public about the sudden price hike, the company has taken necessary steps to address the issue. The STO is now working to resolve concerns and alleviate the burden on consumers.

STO has now identified the demand for onions in the Maldivian market and started importing onions to control the price of onions in the market and ensure the availability of onions. According to the company, the first shipment of 4,500 sacks of onions has already been imported.

Imported onions will be available for sale to the general public through regular shops. However, businesses are required to adhere to the maximum selling price fixed by STO to receive onions. STO has urged all sellers not to exceed MVR 20 per kg.

The first shipment of imported onions has now been released to the market. The company has assured that it will continue to supply the onion supply until the onion supply shortage problem is resolved and the market price is controlled.
