President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has tasked the Attorney General's Office with taking all the necessary steps to review Mauritius' case at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) over the Chagos Archipelago and the south of the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone, during the first 14 weeks of office.

This was announced during a press statement regarding its efforts to review the Republic of Mauritius' case at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) over the Chagos Archipelago and the south of the Maldives' Exclusive Economic Zone on Tuesday. The statement was delivered by Under Secretary for Public Policy, Uz. Mohamed Firzul Abdulla Khaleel.

The statement noted that the former Government’s position contradicted the Constitution and the national interests of the Maldives. In this regard, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu tasked the Attorney General's Office with taking all the necessary steps to review the case during the first 14 weeks of office. As per the press statement, the Attorney General's Office has initiated the process of evaluating the judgment and determining additional actions on this issue, constituting a special committee to oversee the work. The statement also noted that the Attorney General has decided to submit a publicly accessible report to the President and Parliament.

The press statement includes a copy of the letter addressed by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to Mauritius' Prime Minister on August 22, 2022. The press statement also emphasized the shortcomings of the points addressed in the letter.
