President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to donate his salary increment to a social fund such as a children's shelter.

The salary increment of the President was approved by the Finance Committee of Parliament yesterday. Following this in a post on X, President Muizzu said the government does not want to increase the salaries of the President, Vice-President, and ministers.

In his post on X, the President additionally indicated that the parliamentary committee's decision was made without consultation with the Administration and that the compensation benefits associated with the relocation will be donated to a social fund, such as the Children's Home ‘Kudakudhinge Hiyaa’.

The current salary of the President is MVR 100,000. Yesterday, the Finance Committee of the Parliament approved an increase in the President's basic salary to MVR120,000. The basic salary of the Vice-President has also been increased to MVR 93,000. Additionally, the members of the Cabinet will now receive a monthly salary of 74,000 MVR, as approved by the committee. Earlier, the Ministers received MVR 66,000 per month as salaries and allowances.

Following the Finance Committee's approval of the salary, the parliament and the MDP, which has a majority in the parliament, have been criticized.
