According to the Finance Committee of the Parliament, the decision to increase the salaries of some state officials and members of institutions was taken following a proposal sent by the President’s Office, stated.

The Finance Committee announced it during a Press conference held today amid criticism of the decision to increase the salaries of the heads of the government and those working under them.

The committee members stated that since President Dr. Muizzu assumed office, the President's Office has suggested increasing the salaries of the members of the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB). The committee members observed that if the proposed increase is granted, the salary of the PCB members would be higher than that of independent institutions.

In the press conference, MP Hussain Mohamed Didi, a member of the Committee, stated that independent institutions, including the judiciary, have recommended an increase in salaries. He stressed that it would be unfair and create chaos within the state if only specific individuals were to receive a salary hike. Therefore, any salary increase must be fair and equitable for all.

MP Hussain stated that the state has a salary structure, and the salaries have been increased accordingly; it would not be objectionable to do so by any other rule.

He also said that the salaries of the President and Vice-President are not being increased at their proposal. It is a legal responsibility of the Parliament, he said.

Committee Vice-Chairman MP Yaugoob Abdulla said the ruling PPM-PNC prosecutor leader also supported the salary increase. No party has spoken out against this, he said.
