Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has said that he hopes that the former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom gets his sentence minimized and that he gets released from jail.

Nasheed said that while speaking in response to the point of order raised by MP Shiyam at the recent Parliament sitting.

“I hope Yameen gets his sentence minimized and released from jail,” said Nasheed.

In 2019, President Yameen was charged and jailed for his involvement in Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement and money laundering scandal. Upon completing one year to his five-year sentence, his supporters have initiated protests across the country in the name of against the abuse President Yameen is receiving.

Following which, Gassan Maumoon has said that it has been a year since former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom remained detained and called to stop the abuse he is receiving. He also added that the former President is held detained with the fear of him becoming successful in the field of politics.

Speaking at a recent press conference, the President of the opposition party Peoples National Congress (PNC), Abdulla Abdul Raheem, has said that President Yameen will not back out, and he will always stand with the people of the Maldives. Abdulla Abdul Raheem said this following his visit to President Yameen at Maafushi Jail. He also said that Yameen has called his supporters to defeat the current government and the ruling party, the Maldives Democratic Party coalition, from upcoming elections, for him.
