The PPM PNC coalition candidate Aishath Azima Shukoor promised to resolve traffic issues and enhance the safety of the city's streets if elected as the Mayor.

Azima was speaking at the mayoral debate broadcast on a TV channel tonight.

Azima stated that the city's traffic congestion is leading to various issues for drivers and pedestrians. She believes that addressing the root cause of the problem is necessary to resolve these issues.

According to Azima, the tow yard is currently full, making it challenging for the police to tow any more vehicles. She highlighted that the absence of a fixed limit on the number of vehicles that can be registered in the city is one of the reasons causing congestion.

"According to the law, there is no fixed limit on the number of vehicles allowed in the city, but the law requires a limit to be set," Azima explained.

Azima attributed the rise in vehicle congestion in the city to the previous government's law change that banned the import of vehicles older than five years. As a result, the number of vehicles registered in the city has surged to over 200 per day.

Azima stated that the city's streets cannot be made safe, secure, and comfortable without addressing the underlying issues. Therefore, as part of her mayoralty, she plans to develop a comprehensive master plan in the first 100 days to enhance the quality of the city's streets.

Azima's vision is to create a safe environment on the city streets for children to walk without worry.
