The Maldives welcomes South Africa's application to the International Court of Justice concerning Israel’s blatant human rights violations in Palestine, stated Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer on platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

Minister Zameer said that the ongoing attacks in Palestine demand urgent action to uphold international humanitarian law and protect innocent lives.

He added that lasting peace is only possible through an independent Palestine State based on pre-1967 borders.

"While we renew our call for a ceasefire and immediate humanitarian aid access, we believe that a just and lasting peace is only possible through an independent Palestine State based on pre-1967 borders."

The application filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice on 29 December 2023, requested to declare that Israel is in breach of the 1948 “Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.”

Meanwhile, the ongoing attacks by the Israeli military have claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians, especially women and children. The war, triggered by the deadly Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, has displaced some 85 percent of the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million residents.

According to health authorities in the Gaza Strip, which is governed by Hamas, over 22,000 Palestinians have died in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
