Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said that he does not agree with implementing the death penalty in the Maldives for any reason.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom posted on X that he does not endorse the death penalty in the Maldives under any circumstances. He stated that any educated person should refrain from discussing the topic to gain public support.

President Maumoon's remarks came as PNC mayoral candidate Azima Shukoor suggested the death penalty be imposed for serious crimes such as drug smuggling.

Meanwhile, the government has also decided to start implementing the death penalty in the Maldives. Homeland Security and Technology Minister Ali Ihsan earlier said the current government will implement the death penalty in the country. The minister said he would do so within the legal framework.
