The Maldives government has suspended three deputy ministers for derogatory remarks against PM Narendra Modi on social media.

Youth Ministry Deputy Ministers Malsha Shareef, Maryam Shiuna, and Mahzoom Majid have been suspended from their posts for posting insulting posts on social media. The three were suspended in connection with their posts, the President's Office confirmed.

In a press release on the issue, the Foreign Ministry said the government was aware of insulting and disrespectful comments on social media against foreign leaders and high-ranking officials, adding that these views were personal and did not represent the views of the government.

The statement further said that the Government of the Maldives believes that freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly per democratic principles and in a manner that does not hinder the close relationships between the Maldives and international partners. Therefore, the government authorities will not hesitate to take action against those who make such statements.
