Abdullah Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has voiced concern over the lack of transparency in identifying candidates who are endorsed by the government ahead of next month's parliamentary elections.

Addressing supporters at a rally aimed at bolstering Mohammed Rai's candidacy for the Makunudhoo constituency on the MDP ticket, Shahid highlighted the confusion surrounding candidate affiliations. He noted the presence of contenders from various backgrounds, including government-backed candidates, independent contenders, and those representing the ruling party.

Of particular concern to Shahid is the participation of individuals who failed to secure nominations in the ruling PPM/PNC primaries, now running independently. Shahid pointed out the challenge faced by the public in distinguishing between government-supported candidates and those endorsed by the PPM/PNC leadership.

Shahid emphasized that such ambiguity does not exist within the MDP, as the party's candidates are either winners of the party's primaries or individuals selected without a primary process.

The MDP president's remarks underscore a broader issue within the political landscape, where the government openly endorses candidates who did not succeed in primary elections, while candidates who won the PPM primaries receive little explanation or support from party leadership.
