The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has strongly denounced recent election campaign disruptions and alleged assault during political activities in the Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi Constituency.

According to the MDP, campaign banners, posters, and other materials belonging to their candidate were removed and covered during a campaign visit by a pro-government PPM-PNC Candidate in Gaaf Alif Maamendhoo on March 23, 2024. The MDP has condemned these actions as undemocratic and contrary to the principles of fair electoral competition.

Furthermore, the MDP has voiced outrage over the reported obstruction of their supporters' ability to express their views during the campaign visit. The party alleges that members of the ruling party coalition prevented MDP supporters from engaging in political activism, describing such behavior as uncivilized and unacceptable.

In a separate incident, Deputy Mayor of Male’ City, Ahmed Nareesh, who was accompanying a PNC candidate during the campaign visit to Maamendhoo, allegedly attacked a youth criticizing the PNC's handling of political activism on the island. The MDP has condemned Nareesh's actions, highlighting his position of authority and stating that such behavior is unacceptable to the Maldivian populace.

The MDP has reported the incident involving Deputy Mayor Nareesh to the Maldivian Police Service, urging authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. Additionally, the party has called on the President and the Government of Maldives to ensure a peaceful campaign environment, free from any infringements on the electoral rights of opposition candidates, per democratic principles and regulations.
