In a recent post on social media platform X, Moosa Zameer, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, extended sincere appreciation to the External Affairs Minister of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the Government of India for renewing the quota allowing Maldives to import essential commodities from India for the years 2024 and 2025.

Zameer's statement highlighted the significance of this gesture, emphasizing its role in strengthening the longstanding friendship between Maldives and India. The renewal of the quota is seen as a demonstration of the strong commitment of both nations to enhance bilateral trade and commerce.

The agreement to renew the quota for essential commodities underscores the mutually beneficial relationship between Maldives and India, reflecting their shared interests and cooperation in various sectors. Under this agreement, India has lifted export restrictions on various essential items. These items include potatoes, onions, eggs, rice, wheat flour, sugar, dal, stone aggregates, and river sand, which would significantly benefit Maldives' construction sector.

The announcement of this move came through a post on social media platform X by the Indian High Commissioner, who noted that the decision was made "under a unique bilateral mechanism." This decision has led to upward revisions in quotas for each item, demonstrating a deepening of economic ties between India and Maldives.
