Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stepped down on Wednesday, concluding nearly two decades in office and ending a family dynasty that began with his father, Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore. Lee formally handed over power to his deputy, Lawrence Wong, marking a significant transition for the island nation.

During his tenure, Lee transformed Singapore into an international financial hub and top tourist destination, with the country's GDP per capita more than doubling. His leadership was also noted for effectively managing several recessions and the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring economic stability and growth. Lee will remain in Wong’s cabinet as a senior minister, maintaining a tradition of former premiers.

In his farewell speech, Lee emphasized the importance of stable politics for long-term planning and urged Singaporeans to support Wong. He expressed satisfaction with his service, attributing the country's progress to the collective effort of the national team and citizen support.

Lee's era saw a significant focus on technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, contributing to the growth of financial technology and artificial intelligence sectors. However, despite its prosperity, Singapore also faced challenges such as rising living costs and diminishing middle-class jobs.

Singaporeans, while appreciative of the infrastructure and economic improvements, expressed concerns about the high cost of living. The legacy of Lee Hsien Loong will be remembered for his economic achievements and the challenges of maintaining affordability in one of the world’s wealthiest nations.
