Authorities in India have arrested eight individuals in connection with the brutal murder of K. Armstrong, a prominent politician known for his advocacy for the rights of lower-caste Indians. Armstrong, who served as the state leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Tamil Nadu, was attacked and killed near his residence in Chennai on Friday night.

The attack occurred as Armstrong was conversing with friends and supporters outside his home in the Tamil Nadu state capital. According to reports from the Indian Express, six men on motorbikes ambushed Armstrong, hacking him to death with machetes and sickles before fleeing the scene. The swift and violent assault left onlookers unable to intervene.

The assassination has sparked widespread outrage and protests among Armstrong’s supporters. Demonstrators took to the streets demanding justice and calling for the immediate apprehension of those responsible for the crime.

Senior Chennai police officer Asra Garg confirmed that eight suspects are currently being interrogated following a preliminary investigation. “We are conducting thorough inquiries to ascertain the motive and ensure all those involved are brought to justice,” Garg said.

Political leaders across India have condemned the murder. Mayawati, the national head of the BSP, expressed her deep sorrow and anger, describing the attack as “highly deplorable and condemnable.” She called on the state government to ensure that the perpetrators face strict punishment. "The state government must punish the guilty," she stated in a post on the social media platform X.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin also expressed his grief and urged the police to expedite their investigation. “Armstrong’s assassination is shocking and deeply saddening,” Stalin remarked. “I urge the police to conclude the investigation swiftly and ensure justice is served.”
