President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially reassigned the Labor Relations Authority (LRA) to the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, effective August 6, 2024.
According to the President's Office, this move, sanctioned under Section 116 of the Maldives Constitution, follows a recommendation from the Cabinet aimed at addressing challenges related to undocumented expatriate workers.
Previously under the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, the LRA's transfer is part of a broader strategy to improve management and resolution of foreign labor issues. The Cabinet's decision underscores a focus on streamlining processes and enhancing oversight for expatriate labor matters.
The LRA's new affiliation with the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology is expected to provide a more integrated approach to handling labor relations and immigration concerns.
