Former High Court Judge Abbas Shareef has announced that he has not received any indication from President Mohammed Muizzu about running for the vacant position of Prosecutor General (PG).

Shareef, who expressed his candidacy today, assured the Judiciary Committee of Parliament that his decision to pursue the role was based on his confidence in his ability to meet the responsibilities of the position.

In his statement to the Judiciary Committee, Shareef revealed that his candidacy became known to the President's cabinet ministers only after media coverage.

He emphasized that, if appointed as Prosecutor General, he would maintain impartiality and not be influenced by external pressures. Shareef also acknowledged the positive changes brought about by the previous Prosecutor General, Hussain Shameem, and pledged to continue running the office with greater transparency.

The Judiciary Committee of Parliament awarded Shareef a high approval rating of 93.91 percent following his interview. The committee unanimously approved his appointment, which will be confirmed in a special extraordinary session of Parliament scheduled for tomorrow. Once the House approves his nomination, Shareef will officially assume the role of Prosecutor General.
