Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has dismissed claims that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats are in discussions to merge, contradicting a statement made by former MDP MP Ahmed Shafeeg on social media.

MP Ahmed Shafeeg had posted on X, asserting that he had met with former President Solih and former President Mohamed Nasheed to discuss a possible merger between the two parties, and suggested that both leaders supported the idea.

In response, Solih told the MDP National Assembly that he had not spoken to Nasheed for some time, denying involvement in such discussions. He reiterated that the MDP would collectively make any decision on collaborating with other parties.

The remarks clarify that no formal talks have occurred regarding a merger between the two political groups.
