Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel held his first official meeting with Indian Ambassador Munu Mahawara, marking his inaugural engagement with a foreign diplomat since assuming office.

The meeting, held just a day after Khaleel took over as Foreign Minister, focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Maldives and India, with both leaders discussing areas of mutual interest.

The meeting precedes a significant diplomatic event, as President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is scheduled to visit India from October 7 to 9. During the visit, President Muizzu is expected to hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, according to reports from the Hindustan Times. The discussions are expected to center on enhancing foreign relations and exploring financial cooperation between the two nations.

The Hindustan Times also noted that the Maldivian government may submit proposals for financial assistance from India during the talks. Relations between the Maldives and India, which had faced tensions earlier, have seen notable improvement in recent months.

As part of these strengthening ties, India has reportedly agreed to delay loan payments owed by the Maldivian government. The diplomatic engagements are seen as a crucial step in further advancing the relationship between the two neighboring nations.
