The Maldives is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Saudi Arabia, paving the way for the export of Maldivian fish to the Kingdom, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has confirmed.

In a post on his official ‘X’ account, Minister Shiyam expressed his pleasure with the decision, highlighting that the MoU aims to enhance the fisheries industry and explore opportunities for fish exports, technology, and knowledge transfer between the two nations. The agreement will also pave the way for investments in the mariculture sector, a key pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration.

"This MoU will pave the way for the export of Maldivian tuna products to Saudi Arabia, an emerging market for sustainable seafood," Minister Shiyam said, expressing his gratitude to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman for facilitating the decision.

The official date for the signing of the MoU has yet to be announced. However, this agreement marks a significant step in boosting the Maldives’ fisheries export market and strengthening economic ties with Saudi Arabia. The government hopes the deal will not only increase fish exports but also attract crucial investments into the mariculture industry, supporting economic growth and sustainability.
