The government spent MVR 2,455,583.01 on President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to the United States for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the President’s Office has confirmed.
President Muizzu, traveled to New York from September 20 to 29, 2023, and delivered an address during the "High-Level Week" of the UNGA. This marked his first official participation in the UN as head of state.
The President’s Office noted that the visit included important diplomatic engagements, which aimed to strengthen the Maldives' international relations. The delegation accompanying the president included then-Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, Environment Minister Thorig Ibrahim, and officials from their respective ministries.
The total cost of the trip, according to the President’s Office, was significantly lower than the expenses incurred by previous administrations for similar visits. Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s trip to the UNGA in 2019 cost MVR 4.17 million, while his 2021 visit amounted to MVR 5.34 million.
The President’s Office emphasized that the reduction in expenditure reflects the government’s commitment to improving fiscal management and ensuring efficient use of public funds.
