President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ordered an increase in the duty on cigarettes and beedi, raising it to MVR 8 from next month, as part of broader efforts to reduce tobacco consumption in the Maldives.
In a post on his official X account, President Muizzu announced that he would be sending an amendment to the parliament this week to revise the import duty on tobacco products, which will take effect on November 1, 2024. The proposed amendments include raising the specific rate on cigarettes and beedi from MVR 3 to MVR 8 and increasing the ad valorem duty by 50 percent.
The President emphasized that these measures are aimed at discouraging smoking in the community. He also revealed plans for special measures to strengthen the role of enforcement authorities to curb smoking in public places.
In addition to these enforcement measures, President Muizzu announced the imminent launch of a nationwide campaign designed to help smokers quit. This campaign will take a holistic approach, offering specialized support to those trying to overcome tobacco addiction.
He urged the public to support these efforts to ensure a tobacco-free Maldivian society.
Furthermore, as part of his administration's commitment to reducing tobacco use, the President recently decided to ban the import of vaping products and their components, effective November 15, 2024.
