The government has officially identified seven islands to be developed as urban centers across the Maldives, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Housing today.

The islands selected for this urban development initiative are R. Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, Adh. Mahibadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo. These locations will undergo significant development as part of a broader national plan aimed at fostering regional growth and improving living standards in these areas.

This initiative follows an announcement earlier this year by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who outlined plans for medium- and long-term national development, including the establishment of urban centers on key islands. President Muizzu emphasized the importance of creating integrated development zones to accelerate growth in the Maldives' northernmost and southernmost provinces.

The urban centers will be developed under a comprehensive 20-year master plan, which aims to enhance infrastructure, provide essential services, and stimulate local economies. A bill to formalize the establishment of these urban centers is currently under review by the joint committee of the National Development Committee and the Decentralization Committee. Once passed, the bill will facilitate the next steps in these crucial development projects.
