The Bodybuilding Association of the Maldives (BBAM) has issued a public apology following concerns raised about the ongoing 15th World Bodybuilding and Physical Sports Championships being hosted in the Maldives.

In its statement, BBAM clarified that it pursued hosting rights for the World Bodybuilding Championships at Canareef Resort Maldives in Addu City, aiming to boost the Maldives' international profile and support the tourism sector. BBAM noted that extensive efforts were made to secure the opportunity early to enhance the tournament's success and positive impact on the Maldivian economy.

BBAM emphasized that it had signed a formal agreement with the World Bodybuilding and Physical Sports Federation after considering the potential financial losses and reputational risks that a cancellation could pose for both the sports community and the Maldives. The association explained that the resort venue was chosen specifically to draw international visitors to a secluded area.

The event, conducted under the supervision of the Sports Ministry, has faced criticism from the public due to concerns over participants’ attire and perceived lack of coverage. BBAM acknowledged the feedback and expressed regret for any discomfort caused.

The championship, which has sparked debate on social media, will continue through the end of the week.
