The Maldivian Parliament has set a February 1 deadline to finalize a bill amending the Immigration Act to restrict entry for holders of Israeli passports. Proposed by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the bill seeks to block Israeli citizens' entry into the Maldives, a decision seen as a sensitive diplomatic measure.
Initially introduced by South Galolhu MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, the bill passed through Parliament and was referred to the 241 Committee for further review on June 10 last year. After five months, the committee resumed its work on the bill, with discussions underscoring the need for careful consideration of its impact.
During today’s committee meeting, Addu Meedhoo MP Abdul Hannan Abubakar stressed the importance of consulting various institutions, given the bill's sensitivity. He suggested additional time for thorough examination, noting that Parliament will be in recess for the next two months. Hannan proposed a deadline of February 1, allowing for a comprehensive review of the proposed amendment.
The motion for an extended timeline was supported by Maafannu North MP Mohamed Nazim and passed by a majority vote in the committee. The committee will aim to conclude its deliberations by February.
