President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has departed from Baku, Azerbaijan, after attending the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

At COP29, President Muizzu highlighted the urgent need for increased climate finance, urging the international community to turn climate pledges into tangible support for nations most vulnerable to climate impacts. As leader of a low-lying island nation, he stressed the Maldives' unique challenges and called for decisive global actions to limit warming and bolster adaptation measures.

During his visit, President Muizzu held discussions with multiple world leaders, focusing on advancing mutual interests and strengthening global efforts in climate change mitigation. These dialogues emphasized the need for collective action and resource mobilization to meet shared climate objectives.

President Muizzu also participated in COP29 side events, where he showcased the Maldives’ climate initiatives and ambitions for sustainable development. He highlighted the pressing need for robust financial and technical assistance to enable the Maldives and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to meet their renewable energy and resilience goals.

The President’s participation at COP29 underscores his commitment to climate advocacy on the global stage. He champions policies that support the immediate and long-term needs of SIDS and other developing countries.
