The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced that it is closely monitoring outbreaks of common respiratory diseases in China, which have reportedly increased during the winter season.
Amid reports of a state of emergency being declared in China, the HPA clarified that the situation does not warrant such measures. In a statement released today, the agency noted that respiratory illnesses such as influenza, RSV, rhinovirus, adenovirus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and human metapneumovirus are circulating in China and other cold-weather countries.
According to the HPA, while respiratory diseases have seen a seasonal rise in China, the incidence and severity of cases remain lower compared to the previous year. Contrary to some claims, China has not declared a state of emergency in response to the current situation.
The HPA also highlighted the potential for an increase in respiratory illnesses in the Maldives, especially as many travelers return from Umrah and other international destinations during this period.
To prevent the spread of illnesses, the HPA urged individuals with symptoms such as fever or cough to wear masks in public places and avoid visiting vulnerable groups, including the elderly and infants.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the situation in China and providing updates to the public as necessary. Citizens are advised to follow public health guidelines to reduce the risk of transmission during this peak season for respiratory illnesses.
